JAKARTA, July 21 -- As a lengthy, urban battle drags on between Philippine forces and Islamist militants in the southern city of Marawi, a new report by a think-tank has warned of more attacks by radicals in Southeast Asia, including on foreigners. A coalition of Philippine militant groups, augmented by foreign fighters, stormed Marawi, on the island on Mindanao, nearly two months ago. The militants, who claim allegiance to Islamic State (IS), still control a portion of the city despite a sustained military offensive. There have been similar attacks in the Philippines since last year, but the duration and ferocity of the fighting in Marawi has alarmed Southeast Asian nations and led to fears the assault could inspire and unite the region's disparate Islamist groups. "The risks won't end when the military declares victory," said Sidney Jones, director of the Institute of Policy Analysis of Conflict, adding that threats would mount in … [Read more...] about More attacks likely in Southeast Asia after Marawi: report

What impact will this change of geographical entities in the East Sea have on the area? How will this affect strategic and military calculations of the parties involved? What are the other purposes behind the military objective? Dr. Truong Minh Huy Vu, from the Faculty of International Relations of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, talked with VietNamNet about the issues. In 2009, global leaders agreed to try not to let the world warm more than 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial times. This is sometimes seen as a rule of thumb for keeping on the right side of climate change, within “safe” territory. But that’s not at all how scientists meant it, Professor Camille Parmesan, an expert in biodiversity at the University of Plymouth in the United Kingdom said. Climate risks don’t begin at 2C, she said; it’s more like where they go from high to intolerably high. The planet has already warmed by about 0.8C (1.7 Fahrenheit) since the late-19th century. Some of the world’s most iconic places are also the most vulnerable, and they are already feeling the effects. “We’re already seeing contraction of species in the most sensitive ecosystems, such as those dependent on sea ice or those living on mountain tops,” she said. “We’re also seeing declines in some tropical systems, such as coral reefs, … [Read more...] about The reality of global warming: We’re all frogs in a pot of slowly boiling water
PANO - Recently, some China’s orthodox mass media, including the Global Times, the International Herald Leader published articles on China’s illegal placement of the drilling rig Haiyang Shiyou-981 deep in Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf. These articles are written by Ke Xiaozhai, Zun Xiaoying, Lu Jianren of the Southeast Asia Research Institute under the Guangxi University. A Vietnamese researcher Hoang Truong, out of his curiosity had thoroughly read these articles and arrived at a conclusion that these articles are nothing but the chaotic and unscientific arguments on the phenomenon and nature of the incident. The researcher, in his writing to the People’s Army Newspaper on June 7th, cited the article of Ke Xiaozhai with the so called scientific analysis of the four labyrinths that drive Vietnam to take adventurous acts. Having read the article, researcher Hoang Truong stated that what Ke Xiaozhai had written proved that the author … [Read more...] about Why Chinese scholars under the cloak of scientists act unscientifically?

Climate change is not only an environmental issue, or for any single institution to deal with, it is mainly a sustainable development issue. Thus, adaptation to climate change is considered as important as development issues. In this context, adaptation means adaptation to the impacts of climate change and mitigation of its impacts. Climate change has many impacts on people, especially in terms of water, food, energy, health and environment. Hundreds of millions of people in the world could be at risk from food and water shortages because of global warming and sea level rises. Floods cause huge losses each year. Vietnam is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change and it experiences extreme natural disasters annually. Most of the disasters are a result of climate condition fluctuations, with uncertain frequency between dry and rainy seasons. The combination of typhoons, floods, droughts and unpredicted climatic events - all as a result of climate change - leads to annual … [Read more...] about Standing at the crossroards
