The Vietnam Food Association (VFA) has promised that it will buy all commodity rice from farmers this year regardless of gloomy export prospects. According to VFA Chairman Nguyen Hung Linh, Vietnam ’s rice export will face more difficulties this year as China , the largest importer of Vietnamese rice that accounts for 30 percent of total exports, tightens imports via border gates and puts quotas on its companies. He cited stiff competition from major rice exporters such as Thailand , India and Pakistan in terms of both quality and price as a big challenge in 2015. Thailand , the world’s No. 1 rice exporter, is likely to sell out its huge volume of stockpiled rice this year, putting Vietnamese businesses under the pressure of falling rice prices, he added. In addition, local companies have been hindered by financial difficulties, poor cultivation planning, and out-dated technology. Linh predicted that the world rice demand is likely to rise or at least remain the same as … [Read more...] about Vietnam Food Association pledges to purchase all farmers’ rice
HCM City (VNA) – The Vietnam Food Association (VFA) suggested exporting 2-3 million tonnes of rice per year through 2020 instead of 7-8 million tonnes at present. At a workshop in Ho Chi Minh City on December 13, the VFA said nearly 70 percent of Vietnamese rice is sold in Asia each year with China the biggest importer, followed by the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia. However, Vietnam’s rice exports to these markets are sluggish. VFA Chairman Huynh The Nang said in previous years, the three ASEAN nations imported around 2-3 million tonnes of rice from Vietnam. However, currently, rice export volume to the markets has reduced due to their governments’ policies of balancing domestic food and reducing dependence on rice imports. Meanwhile, China has put forth new quarantine regulations, and signed a protocol with Vietnam setting stricter sterilisation inspections on Vietnamese rice and rice bran imports. Nang said it is necessary to improve quality and ensure food … [Read more...] about Vietnam Food Association proposes rice export volume cut
A Vietnamese company has only sold lard oil for animal feed to a firm that has been hit by a tainted oil scandal in Taiwan, and does not take responsibility if the importer used it for other purposes, the Vietnam Food Administration said Monday. It has been alleged that Vietnam-based Dai Hanh Phuc Co has supplied 43,000 tons of lard oil to Ting Hsin Oil and Fat Industrial Co, and that the Taiwanese firm has reportedly used part of the lard to make cooking oil products. But Tran Quang Trung, head of the Vietnam Food Administration, confirmed that Dai Hanh Phuc’s lard “is meant to be used as animal feed,” citing preliminary investigation results. The Taipei Times newspaper reported on October 12 that Dai Hanh Phuc’s exports have been falsely labeled as “fit for human use” by Vinacontrol, a local inspection organization. But Trung underlined that “the lard must be used as animal feed”, adding, however, that “we are not sure if the … [Read more...] about Vietnam food watchdog rejects link between local firm’s lard and Taiwan oil scandal
